The Great Call for Today’s Workplace Leaders

The tides of life take us many places. Often we are in such a hurry we miss opportunities to seriously ponder where we can make the greatest impact in the lives of others and in the organizations we lead. Sometimes we have the privilege of being slowed down long enough for God to catch our attention and remind us what’s important. This is one of those times in my life…recovering from unexpected surgery and some down time to think about God’s purpose for my life.

Created by God in His image…to work?

In Genesis 1 we see the story of creation ending with verse 31: “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good…”

God models for us an amazing work ethic and the results of a job well done. Have we forgotten that this is the core of who we are in God? Have we ever truly understood that we are here to continue to do His work and find joy and satisfaction in that very work?

Gallup’s State of the American Workplace Study shows 70% of workers are disengaged at work. Joy and satisfaction are often missing in action. It doesn’t need to be this way.

Leadership’s Role and Responsibility

Leaders have a vital role in creating and nurturing an organization’s culture in a way that values the work of all and provides meaningful work in a broad sense. When we understand that God “calls” us differently and that through these differences we can complement one another to a common goal…that is when the work in our organizations can become what God had intended.

As leaders of faith-based organizations we have a call to invest and grow people…using their gifts and valuing their contributions. We have a unique calling to partner with God. As we continue to focus on serving our residents, patients and clients well we need to have that same level of commitment to our employees. This will increase the quality of the services we provide and will lay a path for a successful future.

It is easy, however, to get caught in the daily hustle of deadlines and to do lists. It is our responsibility to be intentional and strategic in creating a culture that invests in the lives of others. If we as leaders don’t…who will?
